San Francisco was founded by the Spaniards in late XVIIIth century.

Located in Northern California, the city sits on hilly land at the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific ocean and a large inland bay.

The Gold Rush of 1848-1855, after the discovery of gold on Johann Sutter's estate, boosted its growth.

In 1906, an earthquake followed by a fire destroyed the old town.

The Golden Gate Bridge, one of the city's most famous sites, connects San Francisco and Marin County to the north.
